PRESS RELEASE

The National Defence College, New Delhi, celebrated its Golden Jubilee today with the release of a Special Postal Cover by Hon’ble Vice President  of India, Shri M. Hamid Ansari. To mark the occasion a function was organized at the NDC  which was presided over by the Hon’ble Vice President of India. Other dignitaries present on the occasion included Minister of Communication & IT Shri A Raja, the Chiefs of the three Armed Forces, Defence Secretary and ex- Commandants of NDC.

Welcoming the Chief Guest the Commandant of NDC Lt Gen Prakash Menon highlighted the role of NDC as a premier training institution of the Ministry of Defence, which was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru on 27 Apr 1960. The highlights of the event were an address by the chief guest and release of a Special Cover on this historic occasion.  After releasing the Special Cover to mark the occasion, the Hon’ble Vice President  acknowledged the contribution of NDC for its significant role in training selected senior officers from Defence, Civil Services and friendly foreign countries towards broad understanding of the varied multi-disciplinary aspects of National Security. The institution also serves as an organ of the Government of India to promote mutual understanding between India and its friendly foreign countries.

In his key-note address on the occasion Hon’ble Vice President mentioned  that according to the Annual Report for 2009-2010 of the Ministry of Defence, few countries of the world face the range of security concerns that India faces today.  Addressing these concerns, internally and externally, remains a matter of the highest priority and institutions like the National Defence College contribute to the national effort in this direction.  He added that the NDC deserves appreciation for its structured study of dimensions of national security in our increasingly complex global environment.

The college has over 3000 Alumni since 1960 out of which over 600 participants are from 64 foreign countries.  Many of the alumni have become the Chiefs of the Armed Forces in their countries and some of them have even become Heads of their respective States.  Since 2006, the NDC has been affiliated with the Madras University for award of M Phil degree in ‘Defence and Strategic Studies’, and has been given the recognition as a Research Centre for award of Ph D by the University of Madras in 2007.
