Lt Gen YVK Mohan, SM, VSM born on 20 Dec 1960, had his early education at the renowned Sainik School Korukonda. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Pune and was commissioned into the Indian Army, Infantry (11 Gorkha Rifles on 19 Dec 1981).

 The General Officer has attended most of the prestigious courses including Higher Command Course at Army War College, Mhow, Senior Officer Study Programme at College of Air Warfare, Secunderabad and Royal College of Defence Studies at Seaford House, London (UK). He has held a number of important instructional and staff appointments. The General Offcier has been an instructor at National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He has also served as Assistant Military Attache at Indian Embassy at Pokhara in Nepal.

 The General Officer Commanded Infantry Battalion on the highest Battle Field in the World (Siachen Glacier) and an Infantry Brigade in High Altitude Area. He commanded 17 Mountain Division in Northeast, bordering China. Prior to the present appointment, the General Officer was Assistant Chief of Integrated Staff (Joint Operations) and Chairman Integrated Space Cell (Armed Forces) at HQ Integrated Defence Staff, which involved enhancement of jointness and multi service response in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Situations within India and Abroad.

 The General Officer was awarded with Sena Medal (SM) during Operation ‘MEGHDOOT’ in 2005 and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in 2015 for his admirable and distinguished service in Indian Army.

 The General Officer has distinguished academic record. He has acquired M Sc and M Phil in Defence and Strategic Studies. He is proficient in four languages (English, Hindi, Telugu and Nepali).

 Currently he is Commandant, National Defence College, New Delhi wef 01 Jan 2017, which is the highest seat of strategic learning in the Armed Forces.
